Welcome to Unbecoming Jane
This is a space for those of us that are building ourselves
There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you – Maya Angelou
Wait, what’s with the website name?
Jane is a character from the basal reader in primary school in Trinidad. She was the female protagonist and played with her brother Dick and their dog Spot. Jane and I have a complicated relationship because she bestowed upon on me the gift of reading and she was my ideal with her blonde hair, fancy play dresses, shoes and frilly socks. She was everything that I was not—attractive, popular, and, enigmatically, the foil to a dark, shoeless girl wearing hand me downs playing outside the cane fields on a dirt trace. I spent half a lifetime unsuccessfully trying to metamorphosize into Jane and the other half finding my own voice or unbecoming Jane. I had to cut the idea of Jane out of my psyche to become myself.
